Kurtág György: Transcriptions from Machaut to J. S. Bach
for piano (duet and six hands) and for two pianos
1-19. for piano four hands
20. for piano six hands
21-27. for two pianos
For György Kurtág, the inspiration that can be drawn from earlier music is particularly important, and he approaches them mostly by working together with performers, teaching them, or making transcriptions. Some of the transcriptions published here of the masterpieces of Medieval (Machaut), Renaissance (Lasso) and Baroque (Frescobaldi, Schütz, Purcell and Bach) music are the products of his chamber music teaching, while the Bach transcriptions, mostly made of chorale preludes, were for decades indispensable parts of the Kurtág-couple's concerts.
