János Fusz (Johann Evangelist Fuss, 1777-1819) was born into a Swabian family from Tolna.

Early in his career he worked as musician-in-residence for the music-loving Végh family in their mansions at Vereb and Székesfehérvár. He later worked in Pozsony as an opera conductor. In 1804 he studied with Georg Albrechtsberger, the most famous composition teacher of his time. The elderly Haydn also spoke favourably of Fusz’s works. He completed with Beethoven in plans for an opera. From 1809 he lived alternatively in Vienna and Pozsony, and spent his final years in Buda, by which time he was suffering from ill health. His talent manifests itself most strongly in his songs, several of which anticipate Schubert.
