Gombos László: Sándor Szokolay
Hungarian Composers 20
book
He had already made a name for himself at a young age with his opera Blood Wedding, which was premiered in many languages, in twenty European theaters. His art is characterised by formal and stylistic variety, but the imprint of his individual creative personality can be found in all his compositions.
The backbone of his oeuvre is his operas, which are surronded by hundreds of vocal and instrumental pieces. At a young age the foundations of his fame were laid by dramatic cantatas and oratorios, after which his interest turned to chamber music. Later, sacred music and, at the end of the century, compositions comitted to the national cause and public life took a central role in his work.
This publication is the first comprehensive study on the composer's oeuvre.
