As indicated by the title, Hungarian Dances is a volume containing a selection for violinists which has a common theme. The book contains ten works by twentieth-century Hungarian composers (Járdányi, Sugár, Szelényi, Szervánszky, Weiner) and János Bihari (1764-1827), the great master of the army recruiting dance style known as verbunkos. It contains slow and fast dance movements, the works being based equally on folk sources and elements from verbunkos. In terms of difficulty the pieces are varied: the volume contains material suitable for music students learning for just a few years, as well as for those in the upper years of school. It is an excellent collection for all those learning the violin who want to broaden their concert repertoire.
