Járdányi Pál: Sonatina per violoncello e pianoforte
Pál Járdányi (1920-1966) was one of Zoltán Kodály's most faithful pupils and followers. At the end of his short career in 1965, he wrote his Sonata for Cello and Piano. The two movement format follows the format of a rhapsody. The Larghetto is dominated by pentatonic melodies characteristic of Hungarian folksongs. In contrast, the Allegro assai takes the tone of a bagpipe song, offering rhythmic and virtuosic parts for each instrument.
