This stand-alone dance piece came from the legacy of Zoltán Kodály as a composition written for piano or for four string instruments. Its first edition was published on the centennial of the composer's birth in 1982 under the care of Ferenc Farkas. Gavotte was most likely composed in the 1950s; in addition to its neoclassical tone, the strange melody of the bass-which is often dissonant with harmonies-is reminiscent of the practice of instrumental folk dance music. Gavotte is excellent for music school chamber education and can even be performed in an orchestral arrangement.
