For many years, the trumpet had played a rather subordinate role in Penderecki's work. In his symphony Seven Gates of Jerusalem, however, the instrument, in the form of the bass trumpet, was given, apart from cadences of Joseph Haydn's Concerto in E flat major, a brilliant part representing the voice of God. A similar task is assigned to the instrument in Symphony No. 8. In 2015, after 20 concert works for other solo instruments, Concertino was the first trumpet concerto composed by Penderecki.
